Afternoon walk along Waverly Drive

Waverly Drive is a 1.3 mile residential street in east LA. It parallels the 5 freeway on the northernmost edge of Silverlake, bordering Atwater Village to the north and tucked away within the Los Feliz hills. I spent one afternoon walking its length and shooting a roll of kodak portra through the Yashika.

One end of Waverly Drive, originating from Rowena Ave.
A classic LA "acorn globe" street lamp. Two of these don the WAVERLY DR sign, one on the corner of Rowena (above) and another on Glendale. The first, shown above, marks the beginning of the so-called Waverly Heights portion of the street. The latter marks the end of Waverly Terrace.

The long wall marking the border of the Immaculate Heart of Mary convent
Near the Rowena end of Waverly, one side of an entire city block is made up of a tan, 8 ft wall, marking the border of the The Convent of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary convent for nuns. The several acre property is now the center of a legal battle where the old nuns of the convent, who were moved elsewhere in 2011, are claiming the right to sell, while the archdiocese is doing the same. The nuns have sold for 15.5 million to the restaurant owner of Brite Spot in Echo Park, and the diocese is trying to sell it to Katy Perry for 14.5 million cash. Apparently the nuns weren't too keen on selling their old home to the pop star, even though Perry allegedly told the sisters that she wanted to, "live on the property with her mother and grandmother, sit in the meditation garden, sip green tea and find herself." On the other hand, it's rumored that the Brite Spot owner wants to turn the place into a boutique hotel and bar.

3200 W
Waverly Drive, a mixture of private homes and multi-unit dwellings... including the LaBianca House, the site an infamous Manson family murder. Across the street from the stop sign above, lies 3311 Waverly Dr, what used to be be 3301 Waverly Dr. (the house number was changed in order to deter curious visitors), where on the night of August 9th, 1969, Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary, owners of a supermarket chain, were stabbed to death with bayonets and steak knives by Charles Manson and his followers. The group wrote the words "Healter Skelter" on the refrigerator door in LaBianca blood. Legend has it that under the carpeting of what is now 3311 lie floorboards which are still stained red with blood.

Hyperion Avenue, from the Bridge
The Waverly Drive Bridge is just one part of the Glendale-Hyperion Viaduct complex. The project was completed in 1929 and consists of the famous Glendale-Hyperion bridge that spans the LA river and connects Atwater village to Los Feliz/Silverlake. The Wavely Drive Bridge runs over Hyperion Blvd. in the east-west direction, is two-laned, and 65 feet long.

Power Lines running over Waverly
Large transmission lines run parallel to Waverly. You can see them come out from the west over the Santa Monica Mountains and Griffith Park and then run farther east and out of sight. Some of the nicer homes on Waverly actually have the towers that hold up the lines in their front yards.

Sale By Owner
2900 block of Waverly Drive. Probably sports a view of Glendale and the San Gabriel Mountains to the east, as well as the downtown skyline to the south.
